Bug Sweeping (TSCM): How It Works and What It Costs in the UK

Updated 5 October 2026 by Investigation Bureau

A professional bug sweep (technical surveillance counter-measures, or TSCM) is a methodical electronic and physical search of a space for listening devices, hidden cameras and trackers. A proper one takes hours, relies on equipment that can cost more than a car, and finishes with a written finding whatever the result. A £30 detector bought online takes ten minutes and gives you nothing you can rely on. If you are asking whether someone is listening to you, you need an answer, not a gadget's guess.

This guide sets out what a real sweep involves, what one costs in the UK, and how to weigh your own suspicions honestly before spending anything.

How likely is it that you are being bugged?

Two things are true together. Surveillance devices are cheap, small and sold in large numbers: voice-activated recorders, cameras built into everyday objects, GSM audio bugs that can be listened to from anywhere. And most people who feel watched are not being watched.

The strongest sign is not a clicking phone line or an uneasy feeling. It is information surfacing where it should not: a private conversation repeated back to you, a negotiating position the other side saw coming, a location known to someone you never told. Add an adversary with a motive and with access (an estranged partner who still has keys, a contractor working for a business rival, a dispute over serious money) and a sweep is a rational step. Where neither is present, we will usually say so in the free first conversation and save you the fee.

In practice the most common find is not inside the walls at all. It is a tracker on a vehicle, or phone settings that behave much like spyware: the ex-partner who always seems to know where you are. Our GPS tracker law guide explains the legal position on trackers.

What a professional TSCM sweep covers

A sweep is arranged discreetly: outside working hours for an office, as a visit with a believable explanation for a home. If the person listening knows a sweep is coming, all you search is a room cleaned up for the day.

What bug sweeping costs in the UK

Professional sweeps are priced by scope: the size of the area, the number of rooms and vehicles, and how serious the threat is judged to be. As a guide to the UK market, a professional sweep typically starts at around £500 and rises with the size of the space, so larger homes and multi-room commercial premises cost more. Vehicles are priced individually, alone or as an addition to a premises sweep. Corporate work at boardroom level (pre-meeting sweeps, executive suites, monitoring while a meeting is in progress) is quoted per project through our corporate investigations service.

We quote every sweep as a fixed price in writing before any work begins, after a free, confidential first conversation. Be wary of a suspiciously small flat fee for "a full TSCM survey". That is the cheap online detector with a person attached.

If a device is found

Resist the satisfying reaction. Do not tear the device out, post it online or confront your suspect within the hour. An identified device is evidence and intelligence, and the moment of discovery is when your advantage is greatest.

Frequently asked questions

Are cheap bug detectors worth buying?

Not as reassurance. A consumer RF detector goes off around Wi-Fi, phones and baby monitors all day, which gives false positives. It misses store-and-collect recorders completely and misses cellular bugs between transmissions, which gives false negatives. It tells you whether there is radio energy in the room, and that was never what you were asking.

How long does a bug sweep take?

For a typical home or small office, two to four hours on site. Larger commercial premises are scoped beforehand and can take a full day or longer. In every case the findings are delivered in writing.

Can you sweep a vehicle?

Yes. Vehicle sweeps for trackers and audio devices are among the most often justified, particularly during a separation or a dispute when someone always seems to know your movements. The GPS tracker law guide covers the legal background.

Should I keep the sweep secret from my household or staff?

Yes, until it is finished. Advance knowledge defeats detection, and if the person who placed the device is inside your circle you will have warned them. We plan the timing and the cover story with you during the first conversation.

Find out whether you are being listened to. Talk it through with an investigator. The first conversation is free and confidential, and we will be honest about whether a sweep is justified: send a confidential enquiry.
