Private Investigator in London

Updated 5 October 2026 by Investigation Bureau

Investigation Bureau covers the whole of London: all 32 boroughs and the City, from boardrooms at Canary Wharf to quiet residential roads in Bromley. We run surveillance, tracing and intelligence work here through our own investigators and vetted field operatives.

London is the hardest city in Britain to work, which is the reason method matters here. Keeping hold of a subject through the Underground, on foot in the West End at rush hour, or in traffic on the North Circular has little in common with following a car down a motorway. We plan London operations for those conditions and coordinate them live on our own operations platform.

What London changes about the work

Transport. Someone who taps in at a Tube station can be gone from a car-bound follower within ninety seconds. London operations are planned for movement by several modes (foot, Underground, bus, cab), with operatives placed to match.

Density and discretion. Terraced streets with residents' parking, doormen, porters, and a camera doorbell at every other door: London needs observation positions and cover stories that hold up when someone looks twice. It is craft learned by doing the work, and our investigators have years of UK casework behind them.

Court-readiness. A lot of London investigation work ends up in divorce proceedings, employment tribunals and civil litigation in the capital's courts. We gather evidence with that in mind from the first minute: chain of custody, handling that complies with UK GDPR, and reports written for solicitors.

Where we work in London

We deploy across Central, North, South, East and West London: the City, Westminster, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Croydon, Bromley, Richmond, Ealing, Barnet and every borough in between. There is a separate page for South London and Surrey, where lives often cross the county line. When a case leaves the capital we follow it across the UK, and cross-border work is handled with trusted partners.

A London case costs more than the same case in most of the UK. Our pricing guide sets out what is typical across the market, and every Investigation Bureau quote is fixed in writing before any work begins.

The shape of London casework

Investigation work in London tends to cluster in a recognisable way.

What links them is scale and anonymity. In London a second life can be kept a few stops down the line with very little effort, and that is why professional surveillance here is worth what it costs.

Who you are instructing

Investigation Bureau covers Greater London and the rest of the UK. We do not claim a London office. We are a registered UK company, which you can look up at Companies House. We are registered with the ICO as a data controller (ZC259849). Both records are public. Check them for us, and run the same checks on any investigator you are thinking of instructing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private investigator cost in London?

London sits at the upper end of the UK market. A realistic market figure for surveillance is £500 to £1,200 per operative per day, including vehicle, equipment and reporting, and most matrimonial and workplace cases run for one to three days. Tracing is usually charged as a fixed fee, which across the market starts at around £150. Our own quote is agreed in writing before any work begins, so the figure cannot drift mid-case. The cost guide has the full detail.

Do you cover all London boroughs?

Yes. All 32 boroughs and the City, plus the surrounding commuter belt, including South London and Surrey. No part of Greater London is off our map, and a case that leaves the capital is followed across the UK.

How quickly can you deploy in London?

Usually within days. Tell us if it is urgent: a subject about to fly out, a booked event, a notice period ending. The first conversation establishes whether speed really helps your case, or whether waiting for the right window would produce better evidence.

Will my partner or employee know they are being followed?

Not when it is done properly. Professional surveillance is planned around not being noticed: operatives rotate, vehicles change, and observation positions are chosen carefully on a street that pays attention. The density of London helps. A person on foot in a crowd is far less exposed than one in a quiet village.

Is hiring a private investigator in London legal?

Yes. Private investigation is lawful in the UK and, unlike in some countries, it is not currently licensed, which makes an investigator's own credentials the thing to check. Watching someone in public places, using lawful data sources and researching open sources are all legitimate. Getting into someone's devices or accounts, impersonating an official and obtaining bank data without a court order are not. We refuse to do any of them, and so should anyone else you speak to. See our guide on whether hiring a private investigator is legal.
